Madlanga Commission hears evidence on journalist's home burglary

PRETORIA - The Madlanga Commission continues to lead evidence related to suspended deputy Crime Intelligence head Feroz Khan.

Evidence leader Advocate Adila Hassim examined a WhatsApp conversation between Khan and a Crime Intelligence officer based in KwaZulu-Natal.

She raised concerns that, two months after the exchanges, there was a break-in at Daily Maverick journalist Marianne Thamm’s home.

At the time, Thamm had written an article about a police PPE tender.

Hassim told the commission the matter warranted further investigation.

She said the timing of the burglary should not be dismissed as a coincidence and raised concerns that it could point to the abuse of state resources.

Hassim said that while it would have been preferable to question Khan about the matter, it should nonetheless be investigated.

Khan is currently in hospital and, according to his legal counsel, is unconscious and therefore unable to appear before the commission.

In an affidavit submitted to the commission, Thamm said two laptops were stolen from her home while she was away.
