Mashaba rejects Morero's claims over Joburg's decline

JOHANNESBURG - Former Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba has rubbished claims about his leadership.

Current mayor Dada Morero told Parliament on Tuesday that Mashaba played a role in the City’s decline. He said Mashaba’s leadership prevented senior officials from carrying out their duties.

Morero was giving an account of the municipality’s finances before the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA).

Mashaba said Parliament only needs to compare the City’s financial position during his tenure with its current state.

"This is one of the biggest insults to our Members of Parliament," he said.

"They have access to audited financials of the City of Joburg during my term, so they don't have to take it from me," he added.

Mashaba said the City recorded its highest customer satisfaction levels since 1994.

He also lashed out at Morero, accusing him of appointing people he could control rather than competent officials.
