Morero denies wearing rose-tinted glasses, says Joburg is on track

JOHANNESBURG - City of Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero says he is not viewing the municipality through rose-tinted glasses.

Morero says he is clear about the progress he is seeing in the city.

The mayor delivered the State of the Municipality Address on Wednesday, noting that the daily experiences of Joburg residents remain an area requiring continuous improvement.

"We have had challenges on portals," he says.

"There are areas where we have been successful in," he added, saying the work continues.

Opposition parties have criticised the address, saying the progress outlined by the mayor does not reflect the lived reality of residents.

Morero says budget allocations have added to the challenges facing the city. The municipality’s budget has been impacted largely by its low collection rate.

"Some of our customers are not able to pay their rates and taxes," he says.

"This generally affects our ability to do certain things," he adds. Despite this, Morero says there has been an improvement.

The mayor noted the resurfacing of roads and the restoration of water supply to communities that were without water earlier this year.

He added that further investment is being made in managing and upgrading the city’s infrastructure.
