SECUNDA - A police sergeant has been arrested after investigators allegedly uncovered his involvement in a plot to hijack a diesel truck.
The 44-year-old member of the Mpumalanga Flying Squad was arrested during an early-morning operation at the Secunda Police Station.
He is one of five suspects arrested in connection with the alleged hijacking, which took place in May.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo said the involvement of a police officer came to light during the investigation following the arrest of the other four suspects.
“Following the arrest of the four other suspects, the investigation revealed that there was a police officer involved in the planning of the hijacking,” Masondo said.
The sergeant is expected to make his first appearance in court on Monday.
The investigation into the alleged hijacking scheme is continuing, and police said more arrests are expected.
