No sign of army in the Western Cape

CAPE TOWN - While the army has arrived in some crime hotspots in Johannesburg, it is yet to be seen in the Western Cape.

Since the announcement a month ago by President Cyril Ramaphosa that he would be deploying the army to gang-infested areas to assist the SAPS, violent crime hasn't stopped.

Cape Town's hotspots have reported 16 murders since Saturday.

DA MP Nicholas Gotsell says two meetings were held last week with the Joint Standing Committee on Defence and the portfolio committee on police.

"It is not only about the plan, it is about whether they are ready with training," he said..

"It is about troops who will be deployed in our communities, can deal with civilians because, as we know, troops are trained for combat, not to deal with communities such as ours every day."

While there are boots on the ground in Gauteng, the Western Cape is still waiting for the soldiers meant to assist the SAPS to deal with violent crime.

The Joint Standing Committee on Defence will meet again on Friday.
