JOHANNESBURG - NSFAS is condemning the alleged theft of laptops meant for under-resourced schools in the Eastern Cape, while praising staff members who reported the suspected wrongdoing.
The laptops were part of a donation made in March, with 30 devices earmarked for six schools in the province.
At least 10 of the laptops were allegedly stolen by a former NSFAS board member, who is now facing criminal charges.
NSFAS administrator Hlengani Mathebula says the incident was only recently brought to his attention.
He says the fact that staff members felt confident enough to report the alleged misconduct is a positive sign for the organisation.
Mathebula says employees should be the first line of defence against wrongdoing and that NSFAS is working to rebuild trust among its staff and the public.
He says no one should be able to misuse their position or rank within the organisation.
NSFAS says it welcomes the reporting of suspected misconduct and will continue taking action against wrongdoing within the entity.
The investigation into the alleged theft is ongoing.
