Opposition question Dimpane's credentials

JOHANNESBURG - There have been mixed reactions to Puleng Dimpane's appointment as acting police boss.

She takes up the role from suspended national commissioner Fannie Masemola.

President Cyril Ramaphosa says she'll provide effective leadership.

The MK Party is troubled by Dimpane's appointment.

The party believes the top post in the SAPS should go to a career policeman, with Dimpane having a background in accounting.

"What's concerning here is that the president has now reduced the problem and the inherent problem of crime in this country to just mere finance and the PFMA," said the party's Nhlamulo Ndhlela.

He said Dimpane doesn't have any training on counterintelligence, on crime intelligence, and all the key operational focus areas of the police.

ActionSA has also raised concerns about the appointment.

"This General worked hand in glove with the National Police Commissioner and you know, when the National Police Commissioner was in the dock, I strongly believe that she should have been there right next to him to answer questions," said ActionSA MP Dereleen James.

"She was part and parcel; she was one of those who sort of directed those tenders into the hands of these crooks."

James said she's worried that vulnerable South Africans are again left to their own demise."

Ian Cameron, the Chairperson of Parliament's Police Portfolio Committee, says that, unfortunately, the current leadership of the SAPS is mostly tainted by corruption.

He said Dimpane will need to carefully choose the right people in crucial leadership positions to succeed.

"The amount of investigations that are ongoing really puts her in a very tough spot about getting trusted individuals and placing them around her," he said.
