Police expand insurance scam probes

JOHANNESBURG - Police are investigating whether a deadly insurance fraud scheme in Limpopo is operating in other provinces.

It comes after six more suspects were arrested in connection with the scam.

Victims were allegedly insured and later murdered so payouts could be claimed.

The latest arrests bring the number of suspects to ten, with several believed to be members of the same family.

Eastern Cape police are investigating at least 62 similar cases.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the arrests should serve as a stern warning that police were hot on the heels of those involved in similar scams.

"No matter how long it takes, police will find you and they will make you answer to crimes committed," said Mathe.

"We have a dedicated team that is working on 62 active investigations that have been positively linked to the insurance payouts.

"We are not ruling out the possibility that this money-making scheme could be operating in other provinces as well, but we are building the capacity. We also have a team in the Eastern Cape that is dedicated to investigating such cases," she added.
