Mfazi was initially reported to have died from Covid-19 complications, but investigators now say there are suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

His family have consistently maintained that he was poisoned during his tenure as deputy national police commissioner.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the investigation is both delicate and sensitive.

“We wouldn’t want to divulge too much at this stage. Operations are ongoing,” she said.
