JOHANNESBURG - It takes a village to raise a child, and the Gauteng Education Department is backing that philosophy with millions in funding.
Education MEC Lebogang Maile is rallying communities to transform local schools into safe havens, bridging the gap between financial investment and grassroots community action.
At least 75 schools in Gauteng have been classified as high-risk, facing threats from crime, gangsterism and drugs.

Gauteng schools have been gripped by fear because of a wave of violent incidents in the recent past.
Maile says protecting schools is a shared responsibility and called on communities to work together with the department.
