PRETORIA - South African Revenue Service (SARS) officials raided the City of Tshwane headquarters on Thursday morning, armed with a search warrant for chief financial officer Gareth Mnisi.
The operation targeted Mnisi’s office. eNCA understands that officials seized electronic devices, including a laptop and cellphones.
Mnisi was implicated at the Madlanga Commission in allegations of tender-rigging and leaking confidential information.
He was suspended earlier this year following revelations that he allegedly leaked confidential tender documents to friends and may have participated in a tender-rigging scheme.
However, a forensic report commissioned by the municipality found no evidence of impropriety against Mnisi. He returned to work in July.
City of Tshwane confirmed that it had received prior notification from SARS regarding their intent to execute the search warrant at Mnisi's residence and office.
“SARS had previously advised the City of its intention to execute search warrants at the office and residence of chief financial officer Gareth Mnisi,” said Tshwane mayoral spokesperson Samkelo Mgobozi.
Mgobozi said Mnisi left Tshwane House, the City’s headquarters, accompanied by SARS officials. He referred further questions about the operation to SARS.
