Shibiri grilled over shopping spree after Matlala loan

PRETORIA - Richard Shibiri’s shopping trips to Louis Vuitton and Gucci followed a cash injection from Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala.

His claim that he urgently needed a R70,000 loan from the businessman has drawn sharp scrutiny at the Madlanga Commission.

Evidence shows that about a month after receiving the loan, Shibiri spent thousands on high-end sneakers and sandals, despite his supposed financial distress.

Bank records also show that, at the time, he and his son had more than R100,000 between them.

Shibiri went ahead and borrowed money from Matlala to pay for car repairs that would cost R55,000.

The commission questioned why Shibiri, a senior law enforcement officer, would accept a loan from someone under criminal investigation.

Shibiri claims the Gucci sneakers were a gift for a friend who had bought him a Zegna suit last year.

He says he acquired the Louis Vuitton sandals by trading in a birthday wallet and paying the R3,000 difference.

Despite the commission’s concerns, Shibiri says he has no regrets.

The inquiry resumes on Friday.
