Soweto storm damage highlights risks as El Niño looms

JOHANNESBURG - Vulnerable communities face growing risks from extreme weather, as violent storms damage homes and disrupt livelihoods.

With SADC meeting in Johannesburg to prepare for the 2026/27 El Niño season, the SA Council of Churches says climate resilience is critical to protecting lives and safeguarding food security.

At the historic Regina Mundi Church, the damage is a stark reminder that even longstanding community institutions are not spared.

With El Niño expected to influence weather conditions in the 2026/27 season, the SA Council of Churches warns that the consequences could stretch from lives lost to worsening food insecurity.

As the region prepares for another potentially challenging weather season, the question is whether communities will have the information, resources and support they need to withstand the next disaster.
