Students fear for safety after stabbing at Buffalo City College residence

KUGOMPO CITY - The stabbing of a security guard at a student residence in KuGompo City has heightened fears among Buffalo City College students.

They say the attack, which happened on Sunday, was not unexpected, warning that repeated concerns about inadequate security at Fairview Residence have gone unaddressed.

Following Sunday’s stabbing, students are calling on the Department of Higher Education to intervene.

Student leaders say the college management has long been aware of the security concerns, but they have yet to see meaningful improvements.

They also accuse the private residence owner of failing to take their safety seriously.

Buffalo City College management says it will only be available to respond to eNCA on Monday.

The Department of Higher Education, however, says it is working to ensure that NSFAS-accredited student accommodation meets safety requirements nationwide.

Students believe the attacker could have harmed more people had the residence manager not restrained him.

As the injured security guard recovers in hospital, students are again calling for urgent action, saying they fear it is only a matter of time before another incident occurs.
