MTHATHA - A major fire at the historic Botha Sigcau Building in central Mthatha is still burning, leaving the structure badly damaged.

Emergency services rushed to contain the blaze, which broke out on Tuesday.

The provincial government has assigned the Department of Public Works to assess the extent of the damage.

Safety, maintenance issues previously raised

Hundreds of employees who work in the building are left uncertain about their next steps, with many awaiting guidance on alternative workplaces or temporary arrangements.

Workers report that the building houses at least 11 offices or departments, including education services, and some have attempted to continue working despite the fire.

Officials say no injuries or fatalities have been reported so far.

Firefighters remain on site, tackling flames in affected sections of the building.

Many of the issues in the building, including maintenance and safety concerns, have reportedly been raised over the years but remain unresolved.

Historical significance

The Botha Sigcau Building holds significant historical importance, having been named after a former president of the Transkei.

It is also remembered as the site of an attempted coup led by former Transkei Defence Force General Bantu Holomisa, adding to its political and historical weight in the region.

Some staff members have also spoken out about long-standing issues at the building, saying concerns about its condition had been raised repeatedly prior to the fire, but were not addressed.
