JOHANNESBURG - Wanted Crime Intelligence officer Colonel Ismail Dawood arrived at the Hillbrow police station on Monday to hand himself over to police.
Dawood initially presented himself at the Sandton police station shortly after 8am but was redirected to the Hillbrow police station, where the case against him was originally registered.
However, after arriving at Hillbrow, he was told to return on Tuesday because of confusion surrounding his warrant of arrest.
It was initially reported that Dawood's arrest was linked to explosive allegations made against him before the Madlanga Commission. But his lawyers told eNCA on Monday that the matter relates to an alleged assault and extortion case involving a disputed R3.5 million debt.
The senior Crime Intelligence officer faces charges of extortion, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and intimidation. He has denied all the allegations.
Dawood told eNCA that he was surprised by his looming arrest, adding that the case is unrelated to his duties in the SAPS.
Police spent hours on Friday negotiating with his legal team after raiding his Sandhurst home.
However, Dawood did not honour an agreement to surrender to police.
