11.30am - Snowfall reported in three provinces
Most parts of the country are in the grip of icy, cold and wet conditions, with snowfall in some provinces.
Parents in badly affected areas have been warned to exercise caution when sending children to school.
11.20am - N3 update
Weather is overcast from Cedara towards Midway along the N3.
It is drizzling from Harrismith towards Van Reenen. N11 Amajuba Pass is open in both directions.
Snow is beginning to clear towards Memel. Bothas Pass to Memel is clear.
10.10am - KZN roads update
The R56 Kokstad towards Matatiele is open but wet.
The road is experiencing continuous rainfall and wet conditions and drivers are advised to proceed with extreme caution.
9am - KZN motorists urged to exercise caution
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma says teams from the Road Traffic Inspectorate and grader operators are monitoring major routes and areas that could experience further snowfall.
Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution, as roads remain wet and slippery. Drivers are advised to reduce their speed and maintain a safe following distance.
The MEC continues to urge motorists to remain cautious and monitor conditions before travelling.
8.20am - Gauteng experiences worst cold snap
Gauteng is experiencing the worst of the cold snap this morning, with maximum temperatures at multi-year lows.
Weather warnings also suggest possible snow in parts of the province, while heavy winds have battered the province overnight.
8.10am - Government gives weather update
Cloudy and cold to cool conditions are expected over the central and eastern parts of South Africa, with 30 percent to 60 percent showers and rain, increasing to 80 percent over the south-eastern and eastern regions.
Government said snow is expected in the mountainous areas of the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and the Free State.
It advised residents in affected areas to keep warm, stay safe, and exercise caution when travelling.
7.45am - Hail in Polokwane
No snow, but plenty of hail in Polokwane.
7.30am - Mount Fletcher covered in snow
Mount Fletcher in the Eastern Cape is blanketed in snow.
It is one of the areas that has been hit hard by a cold front sweeping through the country.
7.20am - Maile urges caution across Gauteng
Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile has called on parents, teachers, and school communities across the province to prioritise learner safety and warmth as severe cold and wet conditions take hold.
Learners are encouraged to dress warmly, attend school where it is safe to travel, and exercise extra caution on wet and slippery roads.
7.10am - Severe weather grips Eastern Cape
Parts of the Eastern Cape are virtually cut off this morning as a brutal winter storm tightens its grip.
Heavy snow, gale-force winds, and relentless rain have sparked widespread travel chaos and service disruptions.
In Barkly East, thick snowfall has left motorists completely trapped, forcing the emergency closure of three major mountain passes.
Emergency services and disaster management teams are on high alert.
7am - City Power swamped with over 2,000 outages
The cold spell has arrived in Gauteng and Johannesburg’s power grid is feeling the heat.
City Power is dealing with over 2,000 outages across the metro, with new faults continuing to be reported.
City Power says the cold weather is driving up the use of heaters, geysers and stoves, putting extra strain on the grid.
Rain is also slowing down repairs.
Residents are urged to lighten the load by saving electricity, especially during peak hours.

Gauteng residents waking up across Gauteng this morning are stepping outside into freezing conditions, leaving many asking one major question: Where is the snow we were promised?
While an intense cold snap has firmly gripped the country, bringing heavy snow and severe travel disruptions to the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng's forecast has delivered bone-chilling cold and wet weather but, crucially, no snow on the ground.
6:23am - Snowfall, freezing conditions in Western Cape
A cold front has brought snow to the picturesque mountain regions of South Africa, including the Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve and Franschhoek Pass
While the valley floor is seeing light rain and temperatures of around 7 to 9 degrees Celsius, motorists are being urged to exercise caution on wet roads.
6:09am - N3 traffic remains slow but steady
Travellers using the N3 highway through KwaZulu-Natal have been urged to exercise caution as snow hits parts of the province.
The highway remains open despite the adverse weather conditions.
“The entirety of the N3 toll route is a concern,” said Thania Dhoogra, chief operating officer of N3 Toll Concession.
