105 arrested in Mpumalanga illegal mining crackdown

PILGRIMS REST - Mpumalanga police have arrested 105 suspects in Pilgrim’s Rest during a week-long operation targeting illegal mining.

Of those arrested, 91 are undocumented migrants.

Law enforcement also seized more than R16,000 in cash, believed to be linked to illegal mining activities.

Police recovered numerous items, including 40 shovels, six gas cylinders, a metal detector, seven motors and gold-bearing material.

Some of the confiscated equipment and materials have since been destroyed as police vow to intensify Operation Vala Umgodi in the fight against illegal mining.
