JOHANNESBURG - Twelve people have been killed and nine others wounded following a mass shooting at Jumpers Informal Settlement in Cleveland, Johannesburg.
It is reported at about 11:10pm on Tuesday night, police responded to a shooting incident at the informal settlement. Upon arrival, they found numerous people with multiple gunshot wounds.
Eight men and three women were declared dead at the scene. One other victim, a man, later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
At least nine other people were transported to various hospitals for treatment.
It is alleged more than 10 heavily armed men were dropped off by a white Toyota Quantum just after 8pm. They allegedly entered the informal settlement opening fire on residents at multiple locations, before fleeing the scene in the same vehicle.
A resident who spoke to eNCA, said the sound of gunfire rang out for more than an hour as he cowered in the toilet. The resident said shootings in the area were becoming rife and that last month, a community leader was shot dead.
A community leader who was hesitant to speak, also fearing for her life, said it was suspected the feud was linked to an illegal mining turf war.
"This place is very dangerous. I don't want to say anything because tomorrow, you might find it will be me. It's really painful that people were killed like dogs," the community leader said.
No arrests have been made yet. Gauteng police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni and senior police management are expected to visit the scene on Wednesday morning.
