CAPE TOWN - South Africa's housing crisis is back in the spotlight. As many as 13 million people remain on the national housing waiting list.
In the Western Cape alone, more than 60,000 people are still waiting for a permanent place to call home.
This comes after the Constitutional Court ruling found that the City of Cape Town and the Western Cape government failed to address spatial planning.
The judgment also criticised public participation process, and ordered both the city and province to report back to the High Court on their plans to deliver affordable housing.
Meanwhile, the Western Cape government said it is studying the Constitutional Court judgment on the Tafelberg site and its implications for affordable housing.
The province said it was happy to submit a housing plan as per the judgment, as it is something they have prepared for.
Tertuis Simmer, Western Cape Housing and Infrastructure MEC said: "We have to study carefully what the content of the judgment say, but as much as we respect the rule of law, it reinforces existing directions which we have been busy with since 2019. We welcome the fact that we submit a detailed plan and report to the relevant court. We will just be fine tuning that table which we will be supporting within the prescribed timeline."
