2,700 Grade 1 and 8 pupils in Gauteng still unplaced

JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Education Department says 2,700 pupils in Grade 1 and 8 are still not in class as they continue to scramble for school placement.

The provincial Education Department said late applications and a lack of space are compounding the crisis.

It said it had requested schools to enrol more pupils to clear the backlog.

Provincial spokesperson Steve Mabona said: “We don’t have a problem everywhere; there are certain areas where we have more than we can accommodate.”
