JOHANNESBURG - 70 years ago, the Congress of the People adopted the Freedom Charter in Kliptown, Soweto.
Today, it is enshrined in the Constitution and Bill of Rights.
Government is marking the 70th anniversary with a high-level dialogue at Freedom Park in Pretoria.
It's being held under the theme "From Charter to Constitution, Bridging Generations".
70 years ago, the Congress Alliance brought together about 3,000 delegates from all political formations.
They agreed on the core principle of the charter that "South Africa belongs to all who live in it".
The dialogue will see young people meet key democratic institutions to discuss whether those principles still hold.
