JOHANNESBURG - Joburg’s crumbling infrastructure is in the spotlight again as more than 900 city bridges haven’t been inspected in nearly a decade.
The last survey flagged over 700 structures needing repairs, 68 of them urgently.
Officials warn the situation has likely deteriorated, with pounding rains, ruptured pipes, ageing electrics and relentless truck traffic all taking their toll.
And with a staggering R276-billion infrastructure backlog, the city won’t truly know the extent of the problem until fresh inspections wrap up later this year.
JRA CEO Zweli Nyathi said inspections haven't been done in a long time.
"We're currently doing visual condition assessments and there are ad hoc assessments that we do," he said.
