JOHANNESBURG - Police have arrested 92 suspected illegal miners and seized firearms, ammunition and explosives during an operation in West Village, Krugersdorp.
The operation was conducted on Monday by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and the Department of Home Affairs as part of Operation Prosper/Karabo.
Police also confiscated equipment allegedly used in illegal mining, including phendukas and gas cylinders.
Operation Prosper/Karabo is a multidisciplinary law enforcement initiative targeting illegal mining, gangsterism and related criminal activities across Gauteng.
The operation is ongoing.
