MDANTSANE - The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has welcomed the arrest of four men linked to the murder of renowned South African boxer Zolani Tete.
The NPA spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali, said the ‘ball is in the court of the prosecution '.
“This is to ensure that they present a formidable case both during the application for bail.” he said.
Tete, 38, was attacked on Friday evening as he returned to his home in Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape.
A 27-year-old woman who was with him in the car survived but is in hospital, police said.
Alleged hitmen Siphesihle Kolisa and Athandwa Gangala, as well as alleged middleman Sinebongo Qase, were joined in court by alleged mastermind Uzuzole Goqwana, who made his first appearance on Monday.
According to the NPA, Qase and Goqwana are expected to return to the Mdantsane Magistrates' Court on 1 September 2026 for their formal bail application.
Meanwhile, Kolisa and Gangala have since abandoned their bail applications.
“The State alleges that the murder was premeditated and that the matter falls under the ambit of Schedule 6 of the Criminal Procedure Act. Given the seriousness of the charges, the prosecution will vigorously oppose the granting of bail,” he said.
