AFU secures preservation order against Eastern Cape lawyer

KUGOMPO CITY - The Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) has obtained a preservation order to prevent the sale or transfer of a residential property valued at approximately R4 million linked to Eastern Cape attorney, Zuko Nonxuba.

The property is situated in Gonubie, KuGompo City.

According to Eastern Cape National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Luxolo Tyali, the order by the High Court in Bhisho followed investigations into allegations that Nonxuba misappropriated trust funds and mishandled funds meant for vulnerable beneficiaries.

These funds were linked to court orders obtained against the Eastern Cape Department of Health.

“The AFU alleges that unlawfully obtained funds were used to acquire the property. Evidence presented to the court indicated that substantial sums intended for beneficiaries were allegedly not paid to them and were used for purposes unrelated to those for which the funds had been entrusted,” Tyali said.

The order also prevents the property from being encumbered or otherwise dissipated while further forfeiture proceedings are considered

Tyali said the AFU will now consider instituting forfeiture proceedings in respect of the property.
