CAPE TOWN - The Police Investigating Directorate is investigating an allegation that members of the Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) murdered a gang member in Manenberg on Thursday night.
His friends say the man was beaten to death during a police investigation.
The police's version of events is that he complained to the police of an earache, collapsed and died shortly thereafter.
Sharon Price says on Thursday, she was celebrating her birthday with her husband Wade and friends.
That was the last time she saw him alive.
Police arrived and took Price and two of his gang member friends to the Manenberg Police Station.
They claim they were then assaulted.
According to the police, the AGU was conducting investigations into a murder committed near the Athlone magistrateās court on Wednesday
They were interviewing a possible suspect as part of the inquiry.
During a subsequent search at a premises in Manenberg, Price complained of ear pain, collapsed shortly thereafter, and was pronounced dead.
Price's death is now the subject of an independent investigation by IPID.
