ANC still quiet on mayoral candidates weeks before polls

CAPE TOWN -With just over two weeks to go before South Africans head to the polls, the ANC is yet to announce its mayoral candidates for the November 4 local government elections.

During this week's We The Nation Election debate in Cape Town, the ANC's Jerimia Thuynsma said it's not his place to make the announcement.

'The responsibility of announcing the mayoral candidate is not mine, it is the national executive committee of the ANC, and they have indicated that they will do it," he said.

The party initially committed to announcing its mayoral candidates in September, after failing to do so in August.

But that month has come and gone, and no announcement, or at least an indication of when it'll do so, has yet been made.

On 6 October, ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said the party has concluded interviews and will be revealing those who have the potential to be mayoral candidates soon.
