CAPE TOWN - Does the Defence Force have enough money to protect us?
Well, that's the question Minister Angie Motshekga will have to answer as she tables her budget on Wednesday.
The department spends 64 percent of its money on salaries.
This amounts to over R36-billion, leaving very little for operational matters.
Experts say the current allocation falls far short of the international benchmark of 1.5 percent of GDP.
They say that's what is needed to halt the structural decline of military capability.
Navy Chief Monde Lobese recently said that budget cuts mean our waters are largely unprotected.
The army and air force chiefs have raised similar concerns.
