Another week behind bars for Mogotsi

JOHANNESBURG - Controversial North West businessman and political fixer Brown Mogotsi will spend at least another week behind bars.

Final arguments were heard in his bail application at the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Mogotsi faces perjury and defeating the ends of justice charges stemming from a November shootout the State claims he staged.

He could not hide his profound disappointment that his bail application is taking much longer than he anticipated.

Mogotsi is charged with the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, perjury and defeating the ends of justice. According to the state he faked a hit on his life. He has also made headlines for his connections to an alleged criminal cartel being probed at the Madlanga Commission.

His lawyers fiercely fought for his release on R10,000 bail maintaining that Mogotsi is a well-known businessman who has absolutely no reason to disappear.

But the State painted a vastly different picture. The Prosecutor pushed back and argued that Mogotsi is a flight risk who has been dishonest about where he lives.

Mogotsi will have to wait a little while longer to learn his fate. He remains behind bars and will be back in court on 4 June.
