Arrests, theft and an alleged rape at EFF's KuGompo night vigil

KUGOMPO CITY - It was a busy day and night for KuGompo City police in the wake of the sentencing of Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF) Julius Malema.

Wednesday night after Malema's pre-sentencing hearing, it was a hive of activity at the Jan Smuts Stadium where the night vigil was held.

According to police spokesperson Nobuntu Gatana, a person was arrested for dealing in drugs at the stadium. Another was arrested for cable them.

Gatana says a rape was also reported at the stadium, however, the victim subsequently declined to open a case.

Despite the three incidences that were reported to the police, the evening vigil and the protests on Wednesday and Thursday have remained peaceful.

"Police remain visible and vigilant," says Gatana.

"We have deployed sufficient forces who have been active since the 14th," she added. Gatana says they are ready for all eventualities.

Malema stands to hear his fate on Thursday at the KuGompo High Court.

In October last year, Malema was found guilty on five charges relating to the Firearms Control Act.

He fired shots in front of a build-up area, during the EFF's fifth birthday celebrations in July 2018.

State prosecutor Joel Cesar said the court must consider the degree of premeditation and the lack of remorse by Malema.

However, the EFF leader’s legal team is denying these claims. Instead, they believe that the state has misinterpreted some of the evidence given in court by their client.
