Authorities provide relief after floods wreak havoc in KZN

DURBAN - Floods, snow and strong winds have wreaked havoc in KwaZulu-Natal again.

Soup kitchens and temporary shelters have been set up to help those affected.

KZN CoGTA spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila said many families have been left destitute.

In Mzimkhulu, a resident was killed by a lightning strike, while three others were injured and are receiving medical care. Disaster teams are conducting assessments and coordinating relief.

In Harry Gwala, at least 11 homes were damaged by hail, while a rockfall in Ward 1 has blocked road access, which teams are working to clear.

“Our priority is the safety and dignity of the affected families. Some have lost their critical documents, so we are working closely with the local offices of Home Affairs to ensure they are able to secure their crucial documents,” said Mzila.

He said the department was working closely with different stakeholders to provide assistance to affected families.

“We have set up soup kitchens for them and provided a temporary shelter. Some of them are residing with their neighbours while we assist them to rebuild their lives”

He said there was concern with the number of incidents of drowning that are occurring in several areas across the province.

“The MEC has urged parents to ensure that children do not play near large bodies of water. The MEC is also calling upon residents not to cross low-lying bridges.”
