Bafana Mahungela sentencing moved to November

JOHANNESBURG – Sentencing proceedings for convicted murderer Bafana Mahungela have been postponed to 23 November.

Mahungela made a brief appearance in the Johannesburg High Court on Tuesday, where sentencing was expected to begin. However, the court heard that the presiding officer was unavailable. The pre-sentencing report had also not been submitted.

Mahungela was found guilty last month of murdering Johannesburg teacher Kirsten Kluyts, as well as kidnapping and robbery.

The 23-year-old former Varsity College student was arrested in November 2023 after CCTV footage showed him leaving the scene of the crime wearing Kluyts’ T-shirt.

Kluyts, 24, was found dead on a jogging path in a park. A post-mortem examination revealed that she died from blunt force trauma to the head and strangulation.

She was 14 weeks pregnant at the time of her murder.
