JOHANNESBURG - City Power customers have been urged to be vigilant about who they allow onto their properties, amid warnings that criminals and scammers are posing as utility technicians to gain entry and rob occupants.
The warning comes as the power utility embarks on planned outages to replace and maintain its ageing infrastructure.
City Power acting CEO Charles Tlouane said customers should establish why anyone claiming to be from the utility has arrived at their premises.

“Any person who arrives at their doorsteps, at their premises, if they are from City Power, they need to understand what it is that they are coming to do,” Tlouane said.
He said customers should also be wary of anyone who arrives claiming they are there to disconnect their electricity without prior notice.
“There’s no one who must just arrive and say, ‘I’m going to cut you off,’ without a notice of disconnection. The City will send a disconnection notice in advance, just to alert you that we are coming. That’s the first thing.”
Tlouane said customers should also be cautious if they had not logged a technical query with City Power.
“If the customer did not log the technical query, no one should just arrive at their doorstep,” he said.
