JOHANNESBURG - The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an Orange Level 5 warning for severe thunderstorms that could lead to flooding in parts of the Northern Cape.
Several other provinces are also expected to experience severe weather on Friday, with warnings issued for damaging winds, heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and flooding.
KwaZulu-Natal, parts of the North West and the western Free State have been flagged for severe thunderstorms, while wet and windy conditions are expected over most parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
A Yellow Level 4 warning has also been issued for parts of the Northern Cape and Western Cape for damaging winds that could result in interruptions to power and other essential services.
Meanwhile, a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms is in place over the eastern parts of the Free State, central and northern parts of the North West, southern parts of Gauteng and south-western parts of Mpumalanga.
SAWS says these storms could result in localised wind and hail damage to structures, falling trees and disruptions to municipal services due to excessive lightning.
A separate Yellow Level 2 warning has been issued for disruptive rainfall that could result in localised flooding over parts of the Eastern Cape.
Very cold conditions are also expected in parts of the Chris Hani and Joe Gqabi district municipalities.
