JOHANNESBURG - Buttanut Peanut Butter has been pulled from South African shelves.
It contains higher-than-legally-acceptable levels of aflatoxin.
The Cancer Institute says exposure to these toxins can cause short-term health effects such as nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
Long-term, it's been linked to more serious diseases, including liver cancer.
Prudence Moilwa from the National Consumer Commission said the peanut and chocolate peanut butter flavours contain aflatoxin.
"From the testing, we were able to determine higher than legally acceptable levels of aflatoxin," she said.
"What is important to highlight is that the product should not be consumed and returned to the point of sale."
Moilwa said if consumers present with the symptoms, they should alert the commission.
