Calls for action as pill bottles flood EC beaches

EAST LONDON - Thousands of medicine bottles have washed ashore on East London’s beaches, raising alarm among locals.

Authorities suspect the bottles fell from shipping containers lost during recent storms, in a troubling echo of similar incidents in Port Alfred and Gqeberha last year.

The National Sea Rescue Institute says they are monitoring the situation, but pressure is mounting on Buffalo City Metro and regulators to ensure the safe retrieval and disposal of the drugs.

As cleanup efforts continue, residents are being urged to steer clear of the pills.
