Calls grow to declare Cape Flats gang violence a disaster

CAPE TOWN - There are growing calls for gang violence on the Cape Flats to be declared an emergency or disaster.

Civil society and faith leaders also want the army deployed to help police.

But the President has said that deploying the military can only be done after careful consideration.

Meanwhile, Premier Alan Winde will meet acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia to discuss the way forward.

A parliamentary inquiry is being set up to investigate the violence.
