Calls for SAPS lifestyle audit mount amid integrity crisis

JOHANNESBURG - The chairperson of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police has called for urgent lifestyle and skills audits for senior police officers.

This comes after KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi's shocking allegations.

The commissioner accuses the police minister of having links to the criminal underworld.

Chairperson of the portfolio committee Ian Cameron, says Mkhwanazi's recent actions fit the status of a whistleblower and he knew what he was getting himself into.

"He knows the risks that he took and he made it clear during the presser and I have no doubt that he knows the risks," he said.

Cameron says the next steps are critical and emphasised on a lifestyle and skills audit.

He says this process must be handled by an independent body.
