Cape Flats crime | Mayor calls on Johann Rupert to help devolve policing

CAPE TOWN - Poor policing and low conviction rates are the reasons violence is escalating on the Cape Flats.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis says it can't be laid at the door of local government.

He was responding to businessman Johann Rupert's comments at the White House.

Rupert pointed out John Steenhuisen as the leader of the DA while asking Trump for help to fight crime.

Hill-Lewis says the city will be writing to the National Prosecuting Authority and Parliament's police portfolio committee to give facts supporting the proposal for devolution of police powers.

He believes calls for an inquiry on violence and army deployment are unnecessary because the city is well-equipped to combat crime.
