CAPE TOWN - Cape Town’s Ghost Squad has made more than a hundred arrests since the start of this year.
City leaders say the unit, established in 2009, now forms an important cog in its crime-fighting wheel.
And its officers are responding to more than drunk and negligent driving.
Officers point out that they also react to violent crimes.
“The Ghost Squad has made a remarkable range of arrests, from fraudulent money-printing plates, which they discovered in a vehicle, to disrupting attempted murders, to all manner of incidents," said JP Smith, Cape Town Safety and Security MMC.
"We had one officer who managed to make five arrests single-handedly. Because they are able to get to a scene first, they are required to deal with all manner of incidents, from gang shootings to high-speed chases.”
As organised crime continues to rise, traffic authorities have emphasised the importance of this dedicated unit as part of a coordinated effort to combat crime.
