JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg wants officials held responsible for financial misconduct.
The council has approved the referral of 13 cases worth R4-billion to the city's independent disciplinary board.
Deputy mayor Loyiso Masuku said investigations are due to start and an update on these cases is expected next month.
“An incredible amount of money, money that is supposed to be utilized properly for service delivery because it's taxpayers' money. The disciplinary board sits every two weeks as they've been set up and we expect that by the September council meeting we will be able to get a preliminary investigative update.
“The preliminary investigative update assists us to determine in the interim what actions to take, if there are any actions to take. They also assist us to enable us to see if there are cases that need time, further time to investigate.
“Perhaps they need assistance with other state institutions, which is outside just the purview of our own work. So that is the work that they do and they have to report to council and we do, you are correct, we have a responsibility to make sure that citizens know if there were any acts of maladministration, if there were any acts of corruption.
“That is why we use the word in council, alleged financial misconduct, because they still have to be investigated,” she said.
