City of Joburg reclaiming streets from illegal advertising

JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg has warned that all non-compliant billboards will be removed.

The City has been taking down billboards that do not comply which have been stealing electricity from the municipal grid along Winnie Mandela Drive and the N1.

It says it's losing a lot of revenue through illegal advertising.

Joburg Property Company CEO Musah Makhunga said the problem was widespread and has been persisting for some time.

“The City has realised that it is losing at lot of revenue around advertising. People have been connecting to the street poles without any approval,” Makhunga said.

He warned that enforcement will intensify and those found to be stealing electricity will be prosecuted.
