City of Johannesburg to get deputy mayor

JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg has voted to create a deputy mayor position.

The council voted in favour of creating the position, with 117 councillors voting in support of the motion to establish it, while 87 voted against and 37 abstained.

The DA, EFF and GOOD Party voted against the motion; however, the ANC and COPE voted in favour, while ActionSA voted in favour on condition that the position is tied to an existing MMC position, like in Tshwane, where the deputy mayor is the finance MMC.

The deputy mayor's annual salary will be R1.2-million, with associated benefits.
