ConCourt may have saved teary Mbalula's job

JOHANNESBURG - The Constitutional Court ruling may have just saved Fikile Mbalula's job as ANC secretary general.

That's the word from Sunday Times Deputy Editor Mike Siluma.

The Apex Court ordered the IEC to include 181 of the party's candidates on ballot papers for next month’s municipal elections.

Mbalula was in tears after the ruling and later fainted while addressing the media.

"A lot of people understand why he had to break down in tears, because really, it would have been almost impossible for him to continue unchallenged in that position. And a lot of people were already blaming him, actually.

"But also, I was going to say, on the day, he would have been the most relieved and the happiest man, even though he fell ill. And he wants, know, there are always rumours that he wants to stand as the next president, you know. Now, if you are toughed out of office in a disgraceful way like that, that you lost us an election his chances of making a comeback would have gone up in smoke."
