Corruption-accused Durban businessman maintains his innocence

JOHANNESBURG - Durban businessman, Tariq Downes, insists that he is innocent and that there is no case against him. 

Downes appeared at the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday alongside two SAPS major-generals, Feroz Khan and Ebrahim Kadwa. 

The three were arrested over the weekend after they were allegedly linked to the illegal dealing and unlawful possession of precious metals following an intensive investigation by the Gauteng Counter Intelligence Operations (GCI-OPS).

They face charges including the unlawful dealing in precious metals, defeating the ends of justice, corruption and contravention of applicable legislation regulating precious metals in South Africa.

The trio was granted R20,000 bail under the conditions that they do not interfere with the investigations, or, contact witnesses. 

They are also required to hand in their passports to the investigative officer on or before 12 May. 

Their case has been postponed to 14 July for further investigations.
