Cosatu reconvenes 15th elective congress

JOHANNESBURG - Thousands of delegates are gathering in Kempton Park on Monday as the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) reconvenes its 15th national congress.

The gathering follows the collapse of the congress last month amid disagreements over leadership and internal disputes.

At the centre of the controversy is the eligibility of first deputy president Mike Shingange to contest the elections, a matter that exposed divisions within the federation.

The unprecedented collapse marked the first time in Cosatu’s history that it had failed to convene its congress.

It's still unclear if the disputes have been resolved and if the conference will go ahead.
