Cosatu stages nationwide protests over jobs, wages and cost of living

JOHANNESBURG - The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) is embarking on nationwide protests to mark International Day for Decent Work.

The federation says workers are facing increasing pressure from rampant retrenchments, non-compliance with the National Minimum Wage and what it describes as attacks on collective bargaining.

The action takes on added significance for Cosatu this year as the federation celebrates its 40th anniversary.

Cosatu says that while workers have made gains over the past four decades, millions continue to face severe economic challenges, including unemployment, poverty and inequality.

The federation says South Africa’s economy has failed to grow by more than one percent, while unemployment remains high.

It also claims that companies continue to retrench workers despite what it describes as a severe employment crisis.

Cosatu says the protests are aimed at highlighting the challenges facing workers and demanding greater protection of their rights and livelihoods.
