JOHANNESBURG - Finding a job can come at a cost, from printing CVs to travelling to interviews.
JOBJACK co-founder Heine Bellingan said employers can make hiring easier, by removing unnecessary barriers, especially for entry-level positions.
Simple changes could help more job seekers access opportunities.
"There's lots of things that need to come together, but from what we've seen specifically, especially with the change in technology in the world, there's some easy things employers can do that would make a big difference. And the first thing is just not to hire from a box of paper CVs anymore. I mean, it's 2026. That's not necessary. And hiring from a box of paper CVs is a big barrier for job seekers. The cost of printing, the cost of transport to go drop a CV. So that's just an easy starting point.
"The second thing, just to lessen the burden on the job seekers, is in a store level role not to have two rounds of interviews. That instantly doubles the cost and the barrier job seeker faces.
"Then lastly, if you think about a head office, you know, white collar role, businesses invest so much in finding the right person because the wrong person in your business, in your head office is expensive. But that same thought process and investment should go into your store level roles because it's as important to find the right cashier.
"The cashier is your customer facing person in the business, it's the person driving the revenue, it's person driving sales. And if you're not investing and finding the right person, you're actually often bringing people to an interview that would never stand a chance to succeed in this role, wasting their time, incurring costs for them because they now need to travel to an interview they will just not be successful at.
