Court rejects Mapisa-Nqakula acquittal bid in corruption trial

JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng High Court in Pretoria has dismissed former National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula’s application for a discharge under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Act.

Mapisa-Nqakula is facing corruption charges over allegations that she solicited millions of rand in bribes while serving as Defence Minister.

She has consistently denied the allegations.

Her legal team had argued that the State had failed to present sufficient evidence to justify putting her on trial on the corruption charges.

The court’s decision means the case against Mapisa-Nqakula will proceed, with the former minister still facing the corruption charges.
